The internet of 2023 is kind of a mess. Not because of the monopoly that social media platforms have over online communities. Not because it's easier to ruin a person's life since this should've never really been a thing but people tend to post too much of themselves anyway. But because even the search for knowledge is different. If you used to Google something back in the day it would come up with actual journals and advice guides for that particular subject. Now it's just top 5/top 10 lists and other more artificially created articles just for the sake of ad revenue. It is only destined to get worse now that artificial intelligence becomes more prominent.
It almost feels like we're better off without the world wide web anymore. The only use for it is to keep in contact with friends and family long distances, but due to the obsession with "friend counts" and followers even this has become an exhausting effort.
The information superhighway no longer exists anymore. It's a broken road with several pot holes that makes life miserable both within the digital and physical spheres. Even if you yearn to return to the early net, you'd be hard pressed to discover any of the old communities still with an active member base. Especially when they too fell into the endless habit of manufacturing quick memes as a means to cope with a crumbling broken society.
It's a really sad realization that the internet failed to live up to the promises it once made.

It seems as if no matter what I talk about at home, when I turn on my computer, ads for that subject are everywhere. It's so weird and a bit unsettling.

Ads are one thing that make the Net not as good now. Too many websites rely on them nowadays.
Half the problem with social media is that people are too willing to put too much information out there. I've never been willing to disclose information beyond my favorite TV shows, video games, etc.

I really miss how the internet used to be. It kinda feels like the internet lost its soul (sounds a bit weird lol but I don't know how else to say it). That's why I'm glad that there's still some old school forums around like this one
